Meet Melani from Tahuantinsuyo

Melani is a five year old girl who is currently in the first grade of primary school. She attends our partner project Tahuantinsuyo. She is creative, loving, and has a good sense of humour. Melani has six siblings all of whom are cared for by her mother Doña Julián. Mrs. Julián is a cook at the Tahuantinsuyo Community Centre, which makes it possible for her to cover the family’s necessities such as nutrition, education, and clothing. Melani’s family members include:

  • Two older brothers who are 17 and 18 years old. They dropped out of school due to the family’s economic situation and are now working
  • Her 14-year old sister who is studying the second level of secondary school and attending the Tahuantinsuyo education programs.
  • Her 9-year old brother who is in the third grade of primary school and attending the Tahuantinsuyo education programs.
  • Her 3-year old brother and her youngest sibling who is only 8-months old

Melani’s father abandoned the family due to alcohol abuse and now lives on the street. When the staff at Tahuantinsuyo first met Melani she was a shy and lonely girl. Now, she has become a happy little girl, always chatting and interacting with her classmates at Tahuantinsuyo.
